Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma: Rare Cancer

Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma: Rare Cancer

April 1, 2015

April 1-7, 2015  – Asbestos Awareness Week

We all know Asbestos is bad for us but what you may not realize is it is still widely found in buildings, used for many purposes each year and the USA and Canada are the only 2 Western nations where use of asbestos is not banned! (Crazy right?!)

Along with various health risks, it also causes a rare cancer, Mesothelioma. 75% of the people who have this disease are over the age of 65 and it is 4x more common in men than women. Asbestos is the #1 cause of occupational cancer and more than 107,000 people die EACH YEAR from asbestos-related illness.

Protect yourself from asbestos. If your home or building has asbestos, hire a professional to remove it safely. Don’t smoke, smokers have up to a 9000% great risk of being diagnosed with asbestos cancer.

If you have been exposed to asbestos, get regular checkups and if you do contact an illness it’s best to catch it in the early stages. Be on the lookout, always, for any place in your home or workplaces that may contain asbestos so you can protect yourself, friends, co-workers and loved ones.

No amount of asbestos is safe. Please share this knowledge with others and help get asbestos out of our environment and living/work spaces.

The Cancer Killers Book: The Cause is the Cure Review

What if you knew the secrets to having a healthy body that would not be susceptible to illness like colds and flu. What if you took it a step further and never had to worry about getting diseases like Cancer? “The Cancer Killers: The Cause is the Cure“, has been written to help you understand how you can optimized your health and turn your body into a Cancer Killer.

About the Book

Written by Dr. Charles Majors and Dr. Ben Lerner, The Cancer Killers book aims to help you understand more about the disease of Cancer, the business of Cancer and the risks of conventional Cancer treatments.

You will learn and begin to see how you have it within you to fight off all diseases and help your immune system do what is it designed to do: Keep you healthy!

Learn what foods are good for you, which ones need to be avoided and even how much exercise is optimum for health when you read this book. Dr. Majors also describes his own personal experience with Stage IV cancer and how he found his path to recovery through simple (yet obviously effective) ways of living.

Cancer, like all illnesses, is a symptom. It is a result of something weakened and not working right in your body. You will learn how to strengthen your body and make things right, so that illnesses can not grow and thrive within you.

The Business of Cancer

It’s no surprise that people are suspicious of Cancer cures and treatments. The pharmaceutical industry collects millions upon millions of dollars for their Cancer drugs and equipment and even organizations dedicated to Cancer research stand to gain from keeping Cancer a threat.

Let’s face it, if Cancer was cured, drug companies would lose billions. Organizations would go out of business because there would be no need to raise money for cures and there would be no money to pay staff. Many people make their living off ‘finding a Cancer cure‘ but the sad truth is, the ones who profit from diseases like Cancer do not want it to be cured.

In 1971, The National Cancer Act was signed and The National Cancer Institute (NCI) was established. Empowered and designed to fund Cancer research, NCI has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars over the last four decades and are really no further along in finding a cure than they were 40 years ago.

How You Can Cure Cancer Naturally

This is not a book about miracles. There is no real secret in becoming a Cancer Killer. Your body is already designed to be one. The key lies in education. You must become educated on how to eat healthy, what foods and toxins to avoid and what vitamins, herbs and supplements are beneficial (and which ones are not).

Your body is designed to filter out toxins and keep you in a constant state of good health. However, with fast food restaurants, pesticide and chemical-laden fruits and vegetables and various other toxins in personal care products, our bodies have a hard time keeping up. The Western diet, poor farming practices and lethargic lifestyle has only made things worse for our health and it’s no surprise that Cancer and other illnesses are steadily on the rise.

By reading this book, you will learn how to make better food choices and discover the types of exercise essential for good health. Use of Chiropractic treatments and supplementing your diet with essential vitamins, herbs and minerals will not only help you reach optimum health, it will help you pass on those lifestyle choices to your family so future generations can make Cancer a thing of the past.

What our ancestors called food, we now call organic. We are exposed daily to harmful toxins and must educate ourselves on how to reach optimum health. It is up to us to re-learn how to live and eat healthy so we can take control of our own healthcare. The key to fighting Cancer is by not getting it in the first place and your first step is in reading “The Cancer Killers” book! It is a book I will refer to again, and again, and again and I strongly suggest you do the same!

Breast Cancer: Methylparaben and BPA Increase Risk

Breast Cancer: Methylparaben and BPA Increase Risk

Bottles like these are BPA Free

A new study shows methlyparaben and BPA, chemicals used in many consumer products, may reduce the effectiveness of cancer-fighting drugs like Tamoxifen.

September 13, 2011 – Researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco have just discovered that two common chemicals used in consumer products, methylparaben and Bisphenol A (BPA) are having a negative effect on cancer drug effectiveness. When both chemicals were combined and added to breast tissue cells, they rendered Tamoxifen ineffective. Tamoxifen is designed to kill both cancerous and normal cells.

Breast Cancer Drugs Blocked by Methylparaben and BPA

Reported in the San Francisco Chronicale, the latest study took noncancerous breast tissue cells and exposed them to Bisphenol A (BPA) and Methylparaben. When Tamoxifen was then introduced to stop and kill the cells, it was unable to do so. The results indicated to researchers that introduction of these chemicals made the cells take on cancer behaviors.

Most breast cancer drugs focus on minimizing estrogen, since most breast cancers are driven by estrogen. Both methylaparaben and BPA are known to disrupt hormone function. The Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) confirms that Parabens are known to mimic estrogen and have been found in breast cancer tissue. Non-Toxic Cancer Cure: Conflict of Interest

June 13, 2011 – As a new movie begins to emerge, more and more information is streaming into the media about natural and non-toxic cancer cures. Speculation rises as fingers point to the government agencies and big pharmaceutical companies for trying to stop cancer cures that would not show any profit. The conflict of interest is mind-boggling when you see just how much money is involved and what’s at risk when non-toxic cancer cures are discussed.

University of Alberta Find Cancer Cure

Researchers in Edmonton, Alberta have made a surprising discovery: a drug used to treat metabolic disorders has shown to reduce and eliminate certain tumors. The drug, dichloroacetate or DCA, does not require a patent and can not be patented, so what does this mean? It means that no pharmaceutical company will manufacture this drug or pay the bill to test the drug because there is no money to be made in using dichloroacetate to treat cancer.

Cancer cells are seen as cells that are “immortal”, that is, they don’t seem to have an “off” button. The grow and grow and grow, while normal cells run their cycle and eventually die. Dichloroacetate has shown to reactivate the “off” button in cancer cells and once introduced to cancer cells, they begin to die and are no longer immortal.

Further testing will be necessary to prove this drug will work to treat cancer and it will be up to the University to partner with other organizations in order to raise the necessary funds for the second phase of testing. Privatization of cancer cures is deadly when you consider just how many people suffer needlessly when a likely cure is available but stuck in the fine print of government regulations.

Dr. Burzynski Offers Non-Toxic Cancer Cure for Four Decades

Since the 1970’s, Dr. Burzynski has held the belief that Antineoplastons have been able to cure many types of cancer; especially terminal and untreatable cancers. For the last four decades, he has been suppressed and hounded by government agencies because of his non-toxic solution to treating cancer. He has been in court many times on false charges and has been found not-guilty every time. He has been threatened and they have tried to take away his license but still he continues.

In 2009, the FDA-supervised clinical trials began, when it was obvious they could not shut him down. If the money is raised, third level testing may happen as early as 2011 but this funding is up to Dr. Burzynski. For years he has helped to treat many types of cancer but had his hands tied on many occasions. Parents were turned away if their child had not yet tried “conventional” treatments, those are chemotherapy or radiation therapy, because the FDA put limitations on what patients were allowed to try Dr. Burzynski’s treatment.

In his research, patients who tried Antineoplaston therapy were part of a large success rate. With no toxic side effects, this therapy looks to be promising and non-invading but there is still the hurdle of government approval. If this Antineoplaston therpay is approved, it will be the first time a single scientist will be granted rights to a drug and ultimately, the Big Pharma companies will be shut out for many years before it can be available as a generic drug.

The Conflict of Interest With Cancer Cures

With billions of dollars spent and raised each year for cancer research and treatment, it does not take one very long to realize that big Pharma does not want to cure cancer. Why would they? Why cure it when you can treat it for years and years and years? Think of all the billions of billions of dollars that would be lost if a cure was discovered or, in the case of the University of Alberta research, a drug was found that could not be patented – therefore, no one made any money from it.

Imagine a day when you get a cancer diagnosis and the doctor writes you a prescription for dichloroacetate and you simply go the the pharmacy, fill the order and take your two week course and voila – cancer is gone! Imagine treating cancer like a bronchial chest infection.

Or perhaps it will be a long-term drug that keeps the cancer away. There is still plenty of money to be made in treating chronic illnesses – which is what Big Pharma wants isn’t it? Why cure something when you can just treat it over a long-term period and make billions of billions of dollars and fund research for new drugs to lengthen your lifespan?

There is too much conflict of interest and frankly, I don’t understand how this is even legal. If you are a lawyer or stock-broker or in any position of power, it is un-ethical to continue when a conflict of interest arises. The whole pharmaceutical world is one big conflict of interest because the developing companies have everything to gain from making drugs that don’t cure the problem but rather, treat the problem. Even the organizations profit by fund-raising every year. Where would the National Cancer Institute be if we found a cure for cancer? They’d be in the same place the National Institute of Chest Colds would be: out of business. There is no need for such an organization once you’ve found a cure.

The Conflict of Non-Toxic Natural Cancer Cures Vs. Traditional

Where is it the government’s place to tell us what we can or can not do with our bodies? Who are they to say we can’t choose a non-toxic, non-invasive cancer treatment? The FDA already agreed Dr.Burzynski’s treatment was non-toxic and therefore, not harmful, so why was he not allowed to continue the treatment?

So many parents, so many individuals have been refused these treatments that may work, all because of dollar signs. So many terminal cases that would have jumped at the opportunity to at least “try” the above-mentioned methods and yet, they were not allowed. What did they have to lose – really? If it didn’t work, fine. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I have lost many friends and close family to cancer and I know they would have jumped at the chance to try something that may have worked. They would have loved to have had the option at least, the consideration of something worth trying.

It’s time the people begin questioning the government agencies that say they have our health in mind as they make their decisions. It’s time they be accountable and put under pressure to explain the reasoning behind so many decisions. There are cures for cancer – many of them I’m sure! But it’s not about curing cancer for these agencies, it’s all about treating them as chronic illnesses to maximize profit. Natural remedies exist, and they don’t have side effects or diminish quality of life: We just need to back up the companies who believe in them and help them do their research so one day, treating cancer will be no different than treating a bacterial infection.

Piggy Paint Non-Toxic Chemical-Free Nail Polish Contains Toxic Chemicals

May 17, 2011 – So after yet another phone call from a concerned consumer, I have decided to update on the Piggy Paint debate that is at hand. A couple of months ago I refused to order the new formulation of Piggy Paint because it contained Methylisothiazolinone (Neolone 950), which is a toxic chemical ingredient.

Piggy Paint Claims to be Non-Toxic and Chemical-Free

So Piggy Paints mission was to make a nail polish that was natural as mud and I commend them for trying to make something that was safe for little ones to wear. However, I can not accept the fact that they do have toxic chemicals in their nail polish and still market to the younger children. Parents who may ordinarily not put nail polish on their children are doing so because they believe the marketing hype – but the truth is: Piggy Paint non-toxic nail polish does contain toxic chemical ingredients.

Their website claims:

“Piggy Paint is specially formulated from God’s natural ingredients and dries to a hard, durable finish. There are  no toxic chemicals; it’s free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, Bisphenol A, ethyl acetate and acetone. “

Now, a couple of months ago they changed their formula and included the toxic chemical Methylisothiazolinone which is now listed as Neolone 950 on their website. Methylisothiazolinone or MI or MIT is a common preservative that is often used to replace parabens.

What is Neolone 950 or Methylisothiazolinone?

Neolone 950 is the name for Methylisothiazolinone or MI or MIT. It is used as a preservative in cosmetics and is known to cause skin allergies, rashes, itching, hives, blistering and other forms of skin irrirtation. In-vitro studies showed it to be highly toxic to mammalian cells. In Canada the use is restricted and must no exceed the allowable dosages. In Japan, concentration limits exists when MI is used in combination with other ingredients.

Should Piggy Paint Use Toxic Chemicals Like Neolone 950 in Their  Nail Polish?

Piggy Paint can do whatever they like with their nail polish and ingredients, but they should, at the very least, tell the consumers and retailers what they are doing. By branding their product as safe and natural, they are gaining trust from consumers and retailers and running the risk of misleading them.

From my point as a retailer, I was not impressed when I got my re-stock of Piggy Paint and noticed the new ingredients on the labels. I was not informed by Piggy Paint that the formula had changed and had it not been for me ordering new colors, I never would have checked the ingredients since it was a product I had been selling for two years.

Piggy Paint should tell their retailers, who ultimately are gaining consumer trust and putting their own reputation on the line. If they wish to sell Piggy Paint, they should fully know what the product is all about.

For consumers, Piggy Paint should re-consider how they wish to market their product. Piggy Paint is safer than conventional nail polish – true! But saying it is as “natural as mud?” this may need to be modified slightly. The issue is consumers are smart and getting smarter! They know to do their research and read ingredients, so it’s only a matter of time before this blows up in someone’s face.

Piggy Paint Misleading Consumers and Retailers Saying Nail Polish is Non-Toxic

With the addition of Neolone 950 or MIT, I can’t see how Piggy Paint can really call it’s nail polish non-toxic. Neolone 950 or Methylisothiazolinone is listed as a 6 for EWG rating. It is toxic and should be referred to as such.

Piggy Paint non-toxic nail polish Ingredients: Water, acrylates copolymer, butoxy diglycol, Neolone 950. May contain mica, red 34 lake, ultramarines, titanium dioxide, iron oxide pigments.

The more calls I get from consumers, the more I know Piggy Paint is aware of this situation since consumers tell me they’ve already complained to Piggy Paint. They may soon change the way they market their product and in doing so, the consumers will at least know what to expect when putting the nail polish on their child or infant.

I commend the owner for wanting to make a safer nail polish, I really do. And I loved working with Piggy Paint for the last couple of years. But my mission is to provide the safest products I can find and when Piggy Paint added the chemical MIT to their mix, it meant I could no longer endorse Piggy Paint in my store.

The problem out there is too many companies are green-washing their products and claiming they are natural and safe and many consumers believe the claims. By stepping back a bit and calling this nail polish “the safer nail polish” you would not be misleading anyone and could feel right about how you are presenting this product to consumers and retailers.

As always, I encourage consumers to do their research and try to find the best products they can. Nothing is perfect I suppose but sometimes it’s about choosing the lesser of the evils and going with the safest on the market – they key is in knowing what you are using and understanding what all the ingredients are – then you can make your decisions!

I always appreciate feedback and encourage you to contact Piggy Paint with your concerns, as I know they started their company with good intentions and feel they still want to provide the safest polish that there is – they just may have to do some modifications to get there.

Toxic Metals Found in Makeup Cosmetics

Toxic Metals Found in Makeup Cosmetics

May 17, 2011 – In a report released by Environmental Defence, it was disclosed that 100% of products tested, all tested positive nickel and over 90% tested positive for both lead and beryllium. Environmental Defence is calling on Health Canada to modify their regulating standards and to enforce the laws set forth.

What Toxic Heavy Metals Were Found in Makeup Cosmetics

SGS Canada tested a wide array of mascaras, eye shadows, lip glosses and other cosmetic products that are worn everyday by most women. The results were alarming and outrageous:

  • 100% tested positive for nickel
  • 96% tested positive for lead

toxic heavy metals in makeup cosmetics

    Heavy metals in cosmetics

  • 90% tested positive for beryllium
  • Products, on average, contained at least 4 of the 8 metals of concern (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, beryllium, nickel, selenium and thallium)
  • Highest levels of arsenic (70ppm) cadium (3ppm) and lead (110ppm), found in lip glosses that are often ingested while being worn
  • Highest level of lead was Benefit Benetint lip gloss, 110ppm whichwas 10 times higher than allowable level (Health Canada allows 10ppm maximum on lead in products) The same brand contained 70ppm Arsenic, which is 20x higher than Health Canada limits of 3ppm.

How Toxic Heavy Metals Get Into Makeup and Cosmetics

These metals are not put there intentionally, they are simply impurities in the product and are not required to be listed on the labels, since they are not a directly-added ingredient. Manufacturers could, and should, take care to remove these impurities, but time is money and since guidelines are so laid-back, very few manufacturers remove these heavy metals from the final product.

Neither Health Canada nor the FDA require the manufacturers to supply test results before the market is allowed for sale to the general public. Rather, it is up to the manufacturer to “know” what is allowed and not allowed and to follow the rules. Basically, it’s an honor system and the consumer pay the price for those manufacturers who are not on their best honor.

Toxic Metals of Concern in Makeup Cosmetics

Canada needs to modify their guidelines to not only lower the allowable amount of toxic metals allowed in makeup cosmetics, but also needs to include the whole range of metals that are a concern. They include:

  • Arsenic
  • Cadmium
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Beryllium
  • Nickel
  • Selenium
  • Thallium

Health Hazards Caused by Toxic Metal Build-Up in Body

Heavy metals accumulate in your body and over time, cause a variety of health concerns including: cancer; reproductive and developmental issues; neurological disorders; loss of memory; mood swings; joint and muscle problems; problems with cardiovascular, skeletal, blood, immune system, kidney and renal systems; headaches; vomiting, nausea, diarrhea; lung damage; dermatitis; brittle hair and hair loss.

Heavy metals are also considered to be endocrine disruptors which disrupt your normal regulation of hormonal levels. They are also suspected to be respiratory toxins and there are no known “safe” blood levels.

How Consumers Can Avoid Heavy Metal Toxins in Makeup Cosmetics

Consumers need to begin reading labels and doing their research before using makeup cosmetic products. Since these heavy metals will not appear on the labels as a direct ingredient, you will need to research the brand and company and get familiar with ingredients that you need to avoid.

As The Vancouver Sun reported May 16, 2011, you wont’ find these metals listed on the ingredient label and will have to do your own research to find out what’s safe and what isn’t. Consumer can pressure Health Canada and ask them to start enforcing the guidelines and making it mandatory that full lists of ingredients are disclosed to consumers, including by-products and contaminants.

The Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned parents to avoid letting their children use any products that contained lead. Unfortunately, there are no quick and easy lists to read so as to how parents can help their children avoid lead in their products is anyone’s guess.

What the Cosmetic Industry Says About Toxic Metals in Makeup Cosmetics

Now of course, we can guess what the industry says about any concern for toxic metals in cosmetics, but for the sake of argument and to remain unbiased – let’s give a paragraph or so to Darren Praznik, president and CEO of the Canadian Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrances Association (CCTFA).

Praznik indicates the Enviornmental Defence’s report was skewed and misleading; designed to only scare the general public. He also indicates that that consumers would have to consume “several pounds of cosmetics every day to get within any amount that was of real risk…”.

To Mr. Praznik I would say, ” since these toxic heavy metals are known to accumulate in our bodies over time, how can you tell me that consuming even ‘acceptable’ levels of lead and arsenic will not cause me serious health issues after a decade or two?” The body does not rid itself of these metals and with so many products containing these metals, you are likely ingesting much more than you think.

I would also note that Mr. Praznik indicated that “skin wouldn’t absorb any heavy metals because it acts as a strong shield,” but I wonder if Mr. Praznik has heard of propylene glycol and other cosmetic ingredients that increase absorption rates and allow these toxic chemicals to penetrate the skin easier? Sure the skin is strong, but it’s not made of teflon and what goes ON your body, goes IN your body.

One last note as to why Mr. Praznik hold his viewpoint: It’s his job! He represents 160 companies that are members of the CCTFA including: L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Chanel and Procter & Gamble Beauty, so there is really no surprise which side of the fence he’s on. Imagine how long a president could hold onto his position if he starting saying ” These cosmetic companies are poisoning the general public and don’t want to spend the extra money to ensure the heavy metals are removed from the final product!”

Finding Products Without Harmful Ingredients

You can check out the Environmental Working Groups Cosmetic Database and look up the products you use. The database shows what ingredients are present as well as which ingredients are likely to be contaminated with unwanted ingredients.

Consumers can also find natural products stores that strictly avoid toxic chemical ingredients. Just because a product is in a “natural” section does not mean it is the safest out there. A few boutiques, especially online, are offering only toxic-free products that do not contain questionable ingredients. Stores like Natural e GREEN offer a variety of personal care and cleaning products for the whole family and keep their customers informed with the latest information.

You may also wish to read books on these subjects and get familiar with ingredients you should avoid. “The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide: What You Need to Know Before You Buy”, is a great book that outlines the various common chemicals and alternate names it goes under. It is a thinner style handbook that can fit in your purse and serve as a great reference.

Badger Baby Sunscreen SPF 30: Organic and Non-Toxic

Badger Baby Sunscreen SPF 30: Organic and Non-Toxic

The Safest Organic and Natural Baby Sunscreen: From Badger

May 13, 2011 – It’s that time of year again and the sun is HOT, HOT, HOT! Even on days the sun is behind clouds there is likely to be a high UV index, so take precautions and protect your babies skin. The best protection is clothing, but when it is 40 degrees outside, your poor babe will melt if she is covered head to toe in clothing. Badger sunscreen has just introduced a new baby sunscreen that is non-toxic and contains natural and organic ingredients. It is safe for the whole family AND the environment!

Badger Baby Organic Natural Sunscreen

Tested and approved by pediatricians, Badger Baby Sunscreen contains non-nano sized Zinc particles to provide full SPF 30 protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. It has a mild scent of Chamomile and Calendula and will keep your baby safe from the sun’s harmful rays.

Badger Baby Sunscreen:

  • Protects from both UVA and UVB rays

    badger baby organic natural sunscreen

    Natural and organic baby sunscreen

  • Certified Natural by the NPA – Natural Products Association
  • Very moisturizing; containing organic oils and beeswax to hydrate and protect the skin
  • Water resistant for 40 mintues (min.)
  • Works immediately after application
  • Environmentally friendly and allowed at eco-friendly resorts
  • Packaged in recyclable packaging that is phthalate-free.

How to Use Badger Baby Sunscreen

Put a small amount in your hand and gently rub onto baby’s skin. The sunscreen will melt and allow you to easily rub the product onto babies skin for full sun protection. The sunscreen is designed to sit on top of babies skin and not allow UV rays to penetrate the layers of skin, so babies skin will look a little white – this is normal.

Other sunscreens that soak in the sunscreen do not look white but they allow the UV rays to penetrate the first couple layers of skin, which are most sensitive to sunburns and health hazards. Badger baby sunscreen ensure no UV rays get through ANY layers of the skin.

Difference in SPF Sun Protection Factors: What Does it Mean?

Nowadays there are a variety of sun protection lotions that range from SPF 15 to SPF 100. Be careful when choosing your lotion because a higher SPF doesn’t mean much – seriously!

Take a look at the percentage of UVB rays that are blocked with the following:

  • SPF 15 = 93%
  • SPF 30 = 97%
  • SPF 50 = 98%

There really isn’t a big difference in the protection you get and another interesting tidbit – the FDA does not allow any sunscreen to have a higher SPF rating than 30+! They are currently working on a plan to allow sunscreens to be labelled at SPF 50 in the future, but for now – the maximum is SPF 30+. So those “other” sunscreens you see out there saying they are SPF 100 – are misbranded and are attempting to mislead you.

SPF 50 and SPF 100

Many of the sunscreens that are labelled with high SPF’s protect only from UVB rays and not UVA rays. UVA rays are the harmful ones that can cause skin cancer. Dermatologists recommend SPF of 15 or 30. Some sunscreens that were tested shlowed to block 100% of UVB rays but blocked little, if any, UVA rays. In these cases, you are wasting your money on these high SPF lotions because they aren’t protecting your skin from the harmful rays. This misleading marketing ploy is one of the reasons why the FDA is stepping in to help consumers understand more about sunscreen safety.

Sun Safety Guidelines for Baby and Kids

Generally, the sun is at it’s most dangerous levels between 10 am and 4 pm, according to the FDA. You should

sunscreen lip protection

SPF 15 lip protection

always use a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen when outdoors; even when it is cloudy. Cover delicate areas like ears, nose, lips, eyelids and the back of the neck with sunscreen and use lip protection with SPF 15 or 30.

Remember that water, snow and sand will cause the sun’s rays to reflect and can cause sunburn. Babies and children should also wear sunglasses that provide 100% UVA protection. Look for sunglasses with the label on them- toy glasses do not offer any protection.

Take your baby or child out of the sun every half hour or so to see how their skin is. Re-apply sunscreen as needed and check often – if their skin is starting to change color keep them in the shade for a bit to ensure sunburn is not developing. Remember too that if you are traveling to hot destinations where the sun is stronger than you are used to, it is a good idea to limit sun exposure during the first couple of days at least. Sunburn does not show up right away and your child may “look fine” until it’s too late!

Dangers of Sunscreen for Baby and Kids

Many commercial sunscreens on the market contain toxic chemicals that either allow the sun’s rays to penetrate the skin and/or penetrate the skin themselves and leech into the body. Oxybenzone is one of those ingredients and it suspected at being an endocrine disruptor. It is not recommended to be applied over a large portion of your body and sunscreens containing this ingredient will have the following warnings (by law):

“apply liberally”     or   “use sparingly”.

book on chemicals and cosmetics

All you need to know about chemicals

As I wrote in my book, The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide, products that contain harmful ingredients will , by law, carry warnings such as:

  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Use under adult supervision
  • Keep away from children
  • If ingested, contact your local Poison Control Center
  • Keep away from eyes
  • Discontinue is rash occurs; consult doctor if symptoms persist of worsen

Now, the last two are more of a common sense thing really. Any product that gets into the eyes will most likely irritate and cause eyes to get red, but some products contain coal-tar dyes which can cause blindness, so read the ingredients. As for rashes developing, allergies are strange and can happen to anyone at any time. Babies especially can react to essential oils found in natural products, so if you notice any rash with any product, discontinue and re-introduce later.

You can buy Badger sunscreen products in many specialty stores and health stores as well as online boutiques and wellness stores.
