Following Your Life Path

Following Your Life Path

There is one thing that still amazes me everyday: all the things I’ve done that I never thought I’d do!

I think we all have ideas of what we will do as we get older and we envision what kind of job(s) we will have, what type of family, whether or not we will have kids, where we want to live and so on. I certainly had ideas as I grew up but I certainly did not imagine 50% of what I’m doing now and have done so far!

I attribute quite a bit to opportunity! I worked at a fishing lodge when I was freshly out of school for the summer. It was fun and so nice to be on my own! Returning back to my parents I realized I quite liked being on my own and wasn’t afraid to travel. In fact, I realized I should travel and see what’s out there before settling down.

With winter approaching, I looked west at ski lodge opportunities, applying at almost every one I could think of. After not getting any calls back I decided to stay put (in Manitoba) and applied for some jobs there. I was going for a 2nd interview at a restaurant when I got a call from a Jasper ski lodge. I turned down the ski lodge thinking I had made up my mind to stay in Manitoba. As I hung up, the handset was barely back on the receiver as the thought entered my head, “Yes. I am going to work at a ski lodge.”  It just wasn’t going to be Jasper.

A couple of days later, I received a call from Panorama ski lodge. They were coming into Winnipeg to do interviews and we set up a time. I knew this is where I wanted to work and meeting the interviewers I knew Panorama was were I was supposed to be! I got the job and soon was taking the bus to the resort.

With only my pillow, a bag of clothes and a blanket I was on the bus, arriving into Invermere late at night. Waiting at the bus stop (at the time everything in Invermere was closed down after 9pm!) all alone, outside, I wasn’t even fearful that I was being abandoned. The van from the resort was over an hour late picking me up due to an avalanche, but I knew it would be there.

My time at the lodge was amazing, meeting so many people from all over the world. Sharing stories, experiences and learning more about who I was and what I wanted out of life. I did eventually move back to Manitoba and stayed there for the next 7 years. But, as fate will always have it, I promised I’d one day move back out west, to the mountains I fell in love with.

I didn’t have the income or job experience at the time to move myself and my son out west. Wanting a better life for us, I went into debt to pay for my schooling. Getting educated in Business Administration which opened the door to so many jobs. It was this decision that allowed me to move out West. I focused on Calgary since there was a job surplus and it was then I met my husband. Within 3 months of deciding to move out to Calgary, I was settled in with a job lined up.

When I was on maternity leave I decided to do a home-business for some extra income and for something to do. That path led me to a new world of business. The online world. I opened my online store, joined some pre-existing businesses, began writing articles on health and wellness which turned into self-publishing some books as well!

Now I run a few businesses, I am continually learning and exploring new things and am filled with the knowledge that I will learn even more every day. This world is too small, to not experience more. Our minds are too great to not open them to all that is. I am thankful for the event that first started this journey, thankful to  my parents who always supported me and gave me the confidence to venture forth into this world and experience all there is to experience, and I encourage anyone else to do the same because you only come around once!

Loving My Watkins Business: How I Got Started

Loving My Watkins Business: How I Got Started

Isn’t it funny how things work out? When we look back on our lives, what we’ve accomplished and how it all began? I remember (vaguely) a time when I rarely turned on the computer. When I left my work at work. Seems so long ago but I do remember how it all began!

Joined Watkins to Sell Products to Family & Friends

Watkins products since 1868

I remember being on maternity leave and was looking for something to do in my spare time. I considered a few businesses but wanted something flexible. My mom asked me to join Watkins, since her and her friends needed a rep. She lived a couple provinces away from me but that was ok since as a Watkins dealer you can sell to anyone in Canada and the USA.

I mainly joined for personal reasons and because there were no monthly quotas or order requirements, I didn’t feel pressured to do any sales or anything like that. It was convenient, fun and relaxing really. About 9 months after I joined my manager asked if she could transfer some associates onto my team. She lived in the USA and thought it would be good for the Canadian associates to be on my team. That was the beginning!

How I Grew My Watkins Business

I began thinking “Yes, I think I’ll get serious about this business now!” I started to do some marketing and building up a customer base. Sending out informative, not spammy, newsletters each month to give my customers recipe ideas and information. I approached the business as I had approached it myself – with no pressure! I never focused on the MLM side of things or pushed it as a ‘make millions overnight.” I’ve always been honest with customers and people who wanted to join Watkins, because that’s who I am.

Within 4 months I reached the Manager level, had a great website that helped customers find local reps that ranked in the top spots of Google, and had a big customer base. I really enjoyed what I was doing and loved meeting new people, many whom I’ve never met personally but thank gosh for the Internet!

Watkins Natural Products Helped Me Grow

Watkins introduced a new natural product line, right around the time I was beginning to pay attention to

chemicals and toxins in our personal care products. I wanted safer products for my children and family and began doing research. My research showed that good products were hard to come by and that if you wanted something non-toxic you had to pay lots of shipping charges and order from many stores online.

I decided to open my own store, bringing in basic personal care products and selling them in my local community. I called the store Natural e GREEN and it wasn’t long before I opened an online store with 220 products. It’s been 3 years now, the business now offers over 800 products and ships worldwide. I’ve written two books (“The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide” and “Helping Your ADHD/ADD Child”) and hundreds of other health and wellness articles. My days are spent in front of the computer, processing online orders, keeping up with social media, researching and writing articles, researching new alternatives for better health and meeting people and hearing their stories. There was a time that I rarely turned on the computer, now, I can’t imagine a life without it!

Why I Think Watkins is a Good Business

April 2012 Special - Free $50 Gift Certificate for new associates

I’ve looked into other businesses and to be honest, many have quotas and you have to place min orders and order catalogs and all sorts of nonsense. Watkins has been around a long time (since 1868) and the group I’m a part of (The Summit Group) gives tons of great support and neat contests and giveaways. Like right now, there is a contest for a free $50 Gift Certificate for new associates who join in April and the chance to win an Apple iPad!  I was lucky, I joined one of the fastest growing and strongest teams. My manager and hers are both awesome and supportive and as a whole we offer that support to anyone on our team.

I am thankful for my Watkins business and all I’ve has the pleasure of experiencing as a team manager. Although I originally joined more to get the discount on my personal purchases, I now run Watkins as a full-time business and LOVE it!

Shopping for Natural Products Online: Baby Kids and Adults

When I first started my business I wondered how I could possibly sell natural products online since the online experience is usually quite limited. For starters, you can’t touch or smell the products, so how can customers really know what they are buying?

Shopping Online Requires Good Product Descriptions

The first thing I realized was all of my products needed really good product descriptions. Pictures were a must but there were so many other details I had to make sure I included. With over 600 products now, I am still tweaking my products -even after 2 years of being open!

Some descriptions of the natural products I sell are things like product size and full ingredient listings. I am surprised by sites like Well.ca that don’t have ingredient listings for some of their products. “Paraben-free” or “Contains no SLS” just isn’t good enough!

Not Jumping on the ‘Organic’ Train

It didn’t take me long to realize that it’s not all about ‘Organic’. So many products out there are called ‘Organic’ but are mixed in with toxic chemicals anyways! The standards out there on labeling are pretty lax and really, if you contain some organic ingredients you can get away with calling your product organic – silly isn’t it?

I decided to call my products what they are: Non-Toxic and Chemical-Free. By Chemical-Free I am referring to man-made synthetic chemicals that are known to cause a variety of health problems such as, but not limited to: allergies, skin irritations, cancer, hormonal disruptions, blindness, aquatic and wildlife contamination, neurological conditions and effects, respiratory problems, migraines and other health issues.

Being Honest About My ‘Natural’ Products

Am I perfect in the products I offer to customers? No. I am not a scientist and have been in many debates with scientists and chemists about the safety of chemicals that the government seems to think is ok. I do not claim to be an expert – I’m simply a mom who did some research for two years and built a product line of products that do not contain those harmful chemicals – simple.

I’ve had to drop a few product lines over the last two years when new information about their ingredients were learned. Some companies in the beginning put artificial fragrance in their products without telling me – but since I am super-sensitive to synthetic fragrance and I test everything I sell, I quickly discovered the ingredients when my hands broke out in a rash! If the products don’t fit our guidelines, they don’t get sold in the store!

Special Deals for Customers Who Want Natural Products

I don’t think natural and chemical-free products should have to cost 3x more than is reasonable! Many stores jack the price thinking that customers expect to pay a premium. To me, that is 100% BS! I’m a mom who always wants the best price out there – sure, if it’s a bit more costly I’ll pay it but if I don’t have to why would I?

My prices are average I would say, if not lower than what big competition would offer. I have put all my products on sale and don’t see nearly the kind of profit most other businesses do. But – I believe in people being able to afford good chemical-free products for themselves and their children. I’ve lowered all the prices again this week, for summer sales and offer competitive shipping rates.

Occasionally I’m told my shipping rates are too high, but those customers think shipping should only be  few bucks. What they don’t realize is the smallest package I ship, even to my local area, will cost almost $7. A couple provinces away, it will cost around $12. I only charge $6.95 for local shipments and for the rest of Canada I charge $9.95. So yes, I usually lose money on shipping, especially because the box and packing materials cost around $1.50 each.

Successful Online Business: Natural Products for Baby Kids and Adults

Natural e GREEN: Natural Products Store

Natural e GREEN: Natural Products Store

Is my business a success? I would say so. I am not rich and do not really plan on being rich. But the bills are paid and we are not wanting for anything. I am able to offer over 600 products to my customers (baby kids and adults) across North America at darn good prices and for reasonable shipping. Plus, I’m able to use the same products for my family.

So yes, I would say the business is a success. It is my job and keeps the income going and it helps others find the products they want for the prices they can afford. It gives me peace of mind knowing I’m doing the best I can for my kids and myself and gives me personal satisfaction with each new thing I learn.

Success is not always measured in dollars, it’s how you feel at the end of the day!

You can always shop at our store and even read our articles for more information on chemicals and products that are safe. Learn about sunscreens and how they damage the environment and see how you can choose eco-friendly products. This summer we offer up to 35% lower prices than list and free shipping on orders over $150. Yes – a good chunk of that money comes out of my pocket in the end, but at least I can sleep easy and feel good about who I am and what I do for others!  If you like Natural e GREEN and our store, please like us on facebook, tweet us, +1 us and even vote for us for the Eco-Edge Award that we’ve been nominated for (details on our site!)
