How to Do Oil Pulling & Health Benefits

Oil pulling is not a new concept, it’s been around for hundreds and How to do oil pulling and the health benefitshundreds of years but it’s lately making a comeback as a great way to de-toxify your body, whiten your teeth and give you good overall health. It’s an Ayurvedic method that detoxifies and rejuvenates your body and requires nothing more than some oil and the dedication to swish it around in your mouth for up to 20 min a day!

What is Oil Pulling?

Simply put – it’s swishing oil around in your mouth. Sort of like a mouthwash, though you do it a little longer. The idea is to swish the oil around in your mouth, have it mix in with the saliva and allow the oil to draw toxins from your mouth and body into the swish. After the 20 minutes is up, simply spit out the swish (into a garbage) and rinse your mouth if you desire. Done.

Who Can Do Oil Pulling?

Because you do not want to swallow or especially, choke, on the oil, be careful when allowing children to do oil pulling. They need to be able to do the swishing without swallowing or chocking.

There are also mixed reviews on whether to do oil pulling when pregnant or breastfeeding. Always do your own research. Many women have done oil pulling because they can’t get dental work done while pregnant and they have claimed no adverse reactions and have had no teeth problems either. Others have claimed it helped their morning sickness, but again, do your research to be safe.

Dangers of Oil Pulling

There are no known dangers of oil pulling except for the obvious danger of swallowing the oil. Actually, swallowing the oil pulling leads to white teeth and overall good healthoil itself is not really harmful, though the toxins the oil will contain once you are done are not meant to be swallowed. Any oil is dangerous if choked on though, so be sure not to choke on the oil. If the oil enters the lungs you will not be able to get it out.

This is why you must show caution when deciding on what age children should be allowed to do oil pulling.

How to Do Oil Pulling

Best done first thing in the morning, before you have eaten anything. Do not oil pull on a full stomach.

Take the oil of your choice – it can be coconut, sesame, sunflower etc. Personally, I prefer coconut oil. You can take 1 tsp or 1 TBSP, whatever is most comfortable for you. ( I would start with a teaspoon and work my way up eventually.) Now, you can either get the oil in liquid form (if it’s not already) by placing it in a small bowl, inside a larger bowl of hot water. Or, you can just put it in your mouth, coconut oil for example melts really quickly.

Now, gently begin swishing back and forth, swishing between your teeth and working the oil around your teeth with your tongue. You don’t have to swish hard and you don’t want so much oil in your mouth that you end up swallowing or choking on the oil!

Many people wake up in the morning, get the oil in their mouth, jump into the shower, do their routine and then spit the oil out (into the garbage otherwise it’ll clog the drains) and then be on their way. You can swish with a bit of sale water once you are done and brush your teeth if you’d like, or just swish with regular water if you need to.

Just started oil pulling, why is it that it shouldn’t be done on a full stomach?

The pulling impacts the parasympathetic system and if you have just eaten then it’s conflicting with your digestive system which is working. I just do it first thing in the am while getting Breakfast ready for the kids. Before you know it you’re done and then eat away!

Is this advisable for kids? I’ve been oil pulling consistently and my son always ask if he could also try it too.

The only danger is in them swallowing the oil. You don’t want the oil getting into their lungs. I would wait until they are old enough to be certain they won’t choke on the oil.
